More On Accelerating Technology

MORE ON ACCELERATING TECHNOLOGY Let’s start with a letter . . . Hartford, May 24/89 To Walt Whitman: You have lived simply the seventy years that are greatest on the earth’s historical past & richest in profit & development to its peoples. These seventy years have done far more to widen the interval between man & the other animals than was achieved by any five centuries which preceded them. Walt Whitman What great births you could have witnessed! The steam press, the steamship, the metal ship, the railroad, the perfected cotton-gin, the telegraph, the telephone, the phonograph, the photograph, picture-gravure, the electrotype, the gaslight, the electrical mild, the sewing machine, & the amazing, infinitely various & innumerable merchandise of coal tar, these latest & strangest marvels of a wonderful age. And you've seen even larger births than these; for you could have seen the appliance of anesthesia to surgery-apply, whereby the ancient dominion of ache, which began with the primary created life, came to an f inish on this earth eternally; you could have seen the slave set free, you could have seen the monarchy banished from France, & reduced in England to a machine which makes an imposing present of diligence & consideration to enterprise, however isn’t linked with the works. Yes, you have certainly seen a lotâ€"but tarry but some time, for the greatest is but to return. Wait thirty years, & then look out over the earth! You shall see marvels upon marvels added to those whose nativity you have witnessed; & conspicuous above them you shall see their formidable Resultâ€"Man at nearly his full stature eventually!â€"& nonetheless growing, visibly rising while you look. In that day, who that hath a throne, or a gilded privilege not attainable by his neighbor, let him procure his slippers & get ready to bounce, for there may be going to be music. Abide, & see these items! Thirty of us who honor & love you, offer the opportunity. We have amongst us 600 years, good & sound, left within the ba nk of life. Take 30 of themâ€"the richest birth-day present ever offered to poet in this worldâ€"& sit down & wait. Wait till you see that great determine seem, & catch the far glint of the sun upon his banner; then you may depart satisfied, as understanding you've seen him for whom the earth was made, & that he will proclaim that human wheat is worth more than human tares, & proceed to arrange human values on that foundation. Mark Twain The poet Walt Whitman was born on May 31, 1819, so the seventy years Twain is referring to gets us to 1889. Whitman would reside another ten years after that, a decade in which “the interval between man & the other animals” was widened much more, although Twain’s want that he stay one other thirty would have proven Mr. Whitman much more. What would both of these men consider 2014? Mark Twain Are we but at our “full stature”? I don’t suppose so, however although we've a ways to go, it’s clear that we’re gettin’ there. And if you’r e pissed off by the pace, wait a minute . . . If we were to go back in time to the year 1014, seize some unsuspecting peasant off the streets of, say Paris, and convey him a thousand tears forward in time, what about our world would he acknowledge? I’d say pretty much none of it. This could be very true if we didn’t stay in Paris but brought him to, say, Seattle. In 1014 North America was home to a widespread inhabitants of Native Americans who had no idea that such a place as Paris existed, and the Parisians had no idea that a pair other continents have been sitting over the horizon to the west. This man would have been dragged out of a feudal societyâ€"we think the hole between wealthy and poor, the haves and the have-nots, is just too big now? This guy would beg to vary. He can be completely flabbergasted by America’s racial, cultural, and religious diversity. I assume its truthful to say that 11th century Paris had pretty much none of that. Women operating around doing stu ff like working firmsâ€"wait, what’s a “company?” Let alone having jobs like Secretary of State (Foreign Minister), or, say, Chancellor of Germany or Prime Minister of England, properly . . . he might need heard of queens and so on, but girls don’t get appointed to jobs like that, hired for jobs like that . . . and what’s this “voting”? He wouldn’t know what that word even means. How to you explain your sensible telephone to a guy from 1014? You haven't any widespread language, no shared set of experiences. You would literally have to return to nicely before the Industrial Revolution and then some. How do you explain electronics to someone who’s never heard of atoms and has no purpose to believe such issues exist? Now take that same man off the streets of Paris is 1014 and as an alternative of bringing him all the way in which to the present, go solely a hundred years later to 1114. The city might have modified a smidge. He’d have to get caught up on who the king is, and so on, but I think he’d find everyday life within the metropolis largely unchanged. So then, what if we took a guy off the streets of Seattle in 1914 and brought him a hundred years into the longer term to 2014. Would he be in the same boatâ€"a number of different buildings but in any other case, not a lot has modified? Except: There’s extra, but it’s clear that although it’s apparent that a hundred years isn’t fairly as impenetrable as a thousand years, the sort of acceleration of expertise that Mark Twain tried to explain has been occurring, and continues to happenâ€"it continues to accelerate. So if the distinction between the worlds of 1914 and 2014 far outweigh the differences between 1014 and 1114, what does that mean for the world of 2114? What would surprise us? What might be commonplace that we are able to’t even start to grasp? Then go one other century from 2114 to 2214 and we’re still accelerating, so the place will we get to the purpose that the d istinction between 1014 and 2014 happens in a century as a substitute of a millennium? If the growth truly is exponential, meaning someplace between 2314 and 2414. f a child alive right now will live till 2134 then that baby’s youngsters, born in, say, 2044 will stay until no less than 2164, but then wouldn’t life expectancy grow at the same price, so he’d stay until 2284? And if technology in 2134 may simply be able to add another hundred years or so to at present’s baby’s life span, after which throughout that hundred years they add one other 2 hundred and so on until that baby born, this yr, is immortal. This is why I found the ending of Interstellar no less than reasonably plausible, however not the beginning. â€"Philip Athans About Philip Athans Fill in your particulars under or click an icon to log in:

Client Pitches To Avoid Blah, Blah, Blah Practice And Get Feedback

Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers Client Pitches: To Avoid “Blah, Blah, Blah” Practice and Get Feedback Are you doing client pitches to companies with in-house lawyers? If so, you must read: A General Counsel’s View of Law Firm Marketing Pitches: ‘Blah, Blah, Blah’. If you are a long time reader, you might recall that I have written on this subject before. Most law firm pitches look alike. To use a Seth Godin analogy, there are no “purple cows” out there. According to the post, in pitches law firms try to be everything to everyone rather than focused on what they do well. How do you get better at doing a client pitch? The answer is obvious: you practice and get feedback. It is better to be anxious while making a practice client pitch, so you will be less anxious when you are making a real pitch to a client. In my coaching program, I am a big proponent of “learning by doing.” Yesterday, a group I coach did a client pitch to a fictitious client I created. This is typically one of the most valuable group coaching sessions, and was the case yesterday. We created four teams and sent each team the fictions client’s web homepage, a summary of recent events and a letter from the company general counsel outlining what she wanted in the pitch. I also sent each team some articles on client pitches I thought would be valuable. Prior to our meeting, each team had to do some research on the firm’s capabilities in certain practice areas, the firm’s views on alternative billing arrangements and the firm’s diversity program. We gave each team 20 minutes to make a pitch to a business owner played by me, and the company general counsel, played very well by a firm partner. During each presentation, the general counsel asked each pitch team challenging questions. After all four teams had made their presentations, we discussed and critiqued each team’s opening, main portion and closing. We focused both on what they said and their style. We encouraged each team to ask more questions and engage the client more when they give an actual client pitch. In my experience, both giving pitches and watching lawyers do it, I have come up with a list of 25 points for you to consider when you are preparing for the pitch. Here is Client Pitch Presentations: Be Sure to Answer. I believe if you answer the relevant questions in this list, your presentation will not be “blah, blah, blah.” On Monday, I will share with you ideas on creating a mock one-on-one meeting with a new potential client. Once again, the idea is to practice that kind of meeting and get feedback.   I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

Engineering Meets Art

Building Meets Art Building Meets Art Building Meets Art Architects are applying the standards of a seventeenth century Japanese artistic expression to create inventive items and structures that are meeting an assortment of testing plan circumstances in a large group of ventures. The old artistic expression, origami, makes exceptional examples and shapes from paper collapsing. Today origami is rousing specialists to plan dynamic materials and savvy structures that twist, stretch, and bend, beating customary structure limitations to render items and frameworks with astounding execution qualities and highlights. The incredibly minimal car airbag is a case of origami-roused designing, which is likewise making business advances in the vitality, attire, and medicinal services enterprises. Mirroring the rising enthusiasm for the field, the National Science Foundation as of late gave financing to eight U.S. colleges to propel origami designing into the domain of reconfigurable shrewd structures and self-gathering frameworks. Origami building can fulfill the need over numerous businesses for items and frameworks with exceptionally complex applications, says Mary Frecker, a teacher of mechanical designing and biomedical designing at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, one of the schools to get a NSF research award. Origami empowers items with the capacity to overlap and afterward unfurl on request whenever. Prof. Mary Frecker and graduate understudy Adrienne Crivaro talk about the plan of an origami structure.Image: Mary Frecker, Pennsylvania State University To make items to do that, engineers are consolidating dynamic materials like magneto-dynamic elastomers and polymer films into the origami-roused structure. At that point an outside upgrade, for example, an attractive or electric field is applied on the material, actuating the structure to wrinkle, overlay, twist, and show different qualities. While the material is practically otherworldly in its capacity to transform into various shapes and examples, the test for engineers is make a framework that is basically solid and can be created for down to earth use. Customary origami craftsmanship utilizes paper; notwithstanding, most building applications require materials with limited thickness to give the vital quality and firmness to accomplish an ideal usefulness, says Frecker, an individual of ASME. Our examination of trial plans shows that distinctive actuation forms decide various folds, bends, and disfigurement in the material structure. Cover for X-beam Machine As scientists keep on attempting to make new structures that can confront handy use, a few organizations have put origami-propelled plans into the business commercial center, understanding the advantages of items and frameworks with one of a kind collapsing abilities. GE Healthcare as of late worked together with Brigham Young University on a spread for the augmentation arm of a X-beam machine utilized in the working rooms of emergency clinics. GE required a plan improvement over the plastic window hangings normally used to cover the moveable C-arm; the curtains should have been supplanted each time the gadget pivoted all through the sterile field, including time just as cost to surgeries. GE required a plan for the cover that kept up the sterile field during all developments and places of the augmentation arm, says Larry L. Howell, a teacher in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at BYU, Provo, UT, which is additionally a beneficiary of the NSF subsidizing. After a few ideas were assessed and tried, an origami-based structure was chosen. The plan of the cover was perplexing. So as to suit the required movement and geometry of the X-beam machine arm, the BYU group built up a flexible cover dependent on a wrinkle design named Miura-ori. The cover extends and contracts like a melodic accordion to shield the clean field in the working room from the nonsterile expansion arm. The cover is made of Tyvek, a kind of manufactured paper delivered by DuPont. Another human services application for origami designing is in the zone of careful tests, forceps, and different instruments that can enter an opening in the body in a thin and conservative state and unfurl after addition. Origami-based designing may likewise assume a job in improved biomedical stents. Past the clinical field, origami-motivated items incorporate telescopes, defensive spreads for autos, athletic shoes, kayaks, sun oriented clusters, apparatus drawers, and impermanent sanctuaries. These and different items present proof that foldable arrangements are suitable in building configuration, says Howell, an ASME individual. Origami workmanship will keep on motivating items that should be compact and deployable. Future Directions Twenty-eight specialized papers on origami building were introduced in a devoted discussion at the 2014 ASME Design Engineering Technical Conferences, reflecting flooding enthusiasm for the field. As indicated by Frecker, at Penn State, the advancing interest is in self-collapsing structures just as deployable huge scope frameworks for space investigation. Another zone of expanding center is applications that join electrical, attractive, and warm intends to enact materials to empower origami-based structure. Says Frecker: Origami building gives various chances to alter the manner in which we configuration, fabricate, gather, and bundle items and gadgets. For Further Discussion Origami designing can satisfy the need over different enterprises for items and frameworks with extremely complex applications.Prof. Mary Frecker, Pennsylvania State University, University Park
